I was made and raised in a small town in SW Georgia by Depression era parents. My mom finished high school at 16 and graduated college at 84. In between she raised 5 kids - me being the last - and successfully ran her own local business for 25 years. My father became an independent trucker in high school and taught me the art of DIY (Do It Yourself) and GID (Get It Done). Both have passed away now, but they instilled in me so much that has helped me through life: grit, patience, service to others, and determination.
I was fortunate to attend Mercer University on scholarship and later obtained a Master of Science from Florida State University. I was there at the same time as the late, great Coach Bobby Bowden who said,
"To have the kind of year you want, something has to happen that you can't coach..."
We've definitely all been though and continue going through an uncoachable time.
Since 2000, I've been on staff at large and small, public and private universities, including 12 years of service in the University System of Georgia. I'm currently a Program Director (staff) at the University of West Georgia. As an educator, I feel like I've heard it all from wild stories to law suits. What keeps me going is the incredible potential for communities to create, learn, adapt, overcome and compromise. As a state employee, accountability, transparency, service, and responsiveness is always job #1. On Hapeville Council, I will strive to be a good steward of public resources and the trust placed in me.
More about my professional career is on my Linkedin Profile if interested.
I would like to draw from my experience and perspective to serve the residents of Hapeville as your next Council Member at Large, beginning in January 2022.
I know I won't have all the answers, but I learn and communicate facts well. Trying to please everyone is a key to failure, but I'll do my best to do what's best, on your behalf.
Thank you for reading,
Brett R.
